YOUR ROUTE TO A SUPERYACHT CAREER
A superyacht career can take you around the world, but getting your first position requires the right qualifications, practical ability and professional preparation. Here is how to start building your pathway from South Africa.
Step 1
Gain practical RYA skills at Neptune
This is where your training moves from theory to hands-on experience. At Hermanus New Harbour, you will develop practical powerboat, PWC and marine radio skills in small classes with maximum time on the water.
RYA Powerboat Level 2 — build essential tender-handling skills.
RYA PWC Proficiency — gain confidence operating personal watercraft.
RYA SRC Marine Radio — learn international VHF/DSC radio procedures.

Step 2
Build your essential foundation
Start with the safety training and medical certification commonly required for professional yacht crew, including STCW Basic Safety Training and a recognised seafarer medical such as an ENG1.
Step 3
Prepare to enter the industry
With your training completed, focus on building a professional yachting CV, preparing for interviews, checking visa requirements and connecting with reputable crew agencies and industry networks.
Your first job is never guaranteed by certificates alone. Practical confidence, professionalism and a willingness to learn are what help you stand out—and that is exactly what we aim to build at Neptune’s Nautical Academy.
WHY TRAIN IN HERMANUS NEAR CAPE TOWN?
